Preventative Pediatric Dentistry

Ready to give your child a calm, confident smile?

Why Choose Mini Tooth Kids Dentistry for Preventative Care

We are dedicated to prevention. Dr. Ava and her staff spend time educating patients about best brushing and flossing practices and making life-long dental health decisions. Each child is unique, and treatment plans are tailored to their diagnostics.

Special Needs In General Dentistry

Providing a safe and positive dental experience for patients with special needs and sensory sensitivity is key to their long-term well-being.

Dr. Chung is specially trained in behavioral guidance. Her tranquil demeanor allows her to meet each patient where they are, building a safe space where they feel supported and cared for.

She appreciates how important creating a calm environment is to these patients to produce a supportive experience. Every detail is considered, from television screens built into the ceiling so the patient can focus on a favorite show, to comfy weighted blankets. And if a patient is still feeling stress, she is also certified in nitrous oxide.

Routine Check-Up & Preventative Dentistry

Every six months or if needed sooner, a routine checkup includes:

  • Digital X-rays (when appropriate)
  • Cleaning
  • Exam
  • Fluoride Treatment (if desired)
  • If decay is detected, an appointment is made for filling

Dr. Ava meets with parents afterward to update them on their child’s growth and development, as well as any issues to watch for going forward.

Dental Cleanings

Professional cleaning and polishing are especially important for young patients, who may not be brushing as well as they should. Removing plaque and tarter that might be missed prevents decay.

This is also a chance for Dr. Ava to check for tooth alignment and educate patients and parents where they can improve their daily habits.

Dental Sealants

Protecting the back teeth, where food and bacteria can become stuck in the grooves and pits of molars, is a positive preventive tactic in fighting decay. The process for minimally invasive sealants is:

  • Dr. Ava paints on sealant materials which adhere to the molars and sometimes the back of front teeth to protect them.
  • Sealants are best done when the patient is between 6 and 12 years old and the molars initially erupt.
  • Sealants are best done when the patient is between 6 and 12 years old and the molars initially erupt.
  • Studies have shown they can reduce the risk of decay by up to 80%.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride can strengthen tooth enamel, prevent tooth decay and reverse the earliest stages of cavities.

Benefits Include:

  • Makes enamel more resistant to acid in plaque.
  • Prevents early tooth loss and future dental issues.
  • It’s an inexpensive means of avoiding costly dental procedures in permanent teeth. This is a case where a little prevention goes a long way.

Minimally Invasive Treatment:

When decay starts, there are some medications that can be used to prevent drilling. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and Curodont are more effective treatments to prevent decay from spreading. Please ask Dr. Ava for more information.

Custom Night Guards & Sports Guards

A child’s jaw and skull continue to grow until they are between 18 and 21. Having a night guard or sports mouthguard custom made to their teeth and jaw is critical to the level of protection they provide.

Ill-fitting guards can easily fall out on the field or court and open the child up to injury. If a tooth is knocked out from trauma, the child would have to wear a partial denture until they reach adulthood and are grown enough for a dental implant.
